Rawsol CTR - Citric Acid

Citric acid is frequently used in many areas of modern industry. The chemical formula of this crystalline, colorless compound, which is crucial for meeting the needs of the ever-increasing world population, is expressed as C6H8O7.

Citric acid, present in almost all plants, plays a role in many cellular activities in nature. Citric acid’s applications include the food industry, agriculture, metal production and processing, the pharmaceutical industry, and the beverage industry.

Citric acid, used in canned goods, is preferred because it preserves food for long periods. Found in many alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, citric acid is also used as a preservative in other food products.

It is easily oxidized in the presence of various oxidizing agents such as hypochlorite, persulfate, permanganate, periodate, hypobromite, chromate, manganese dioxide, and nitric acid. Trisodium acid is the most widely used salt of citric acid compared to its other salts.

One of the properties that makes citric acid important is its ability to form numerous complexes with multivalent metal ions and chelates. Because of this important property, citrates or citric acids are used to control metal contamination. The singly colored metal ion becomes completely colorless or slightly colored when combined with citrate. With citric acid, metal ions can remain stable by forming chelates, while organic molecules can be catalytically degraded in the presence of metal ions.
